Governance of Enterprise IT (GEIT) and the History of COBITInformation and related technology (IT) has become increasingly crucial to the sustainability and growth of most enterprises and theirmanagement of risk. As a result, IT has moved from a support role to a more central position within the enterprise. The enhanced roleof IT for enterprise value creation and risk management is accompanied by an increased emphasis on the governance of enterprise IT(GEIT). Enterprise stakeholders and the governing board are responsible for ensuring that IT fulfls the goals of the enterprise.2, 3 GEITis an integral part of overall enterprise governance. GEIT addresses the defnition and implementation of processes, structures andrelational mechanisms in the enterprise that enable business and IT personnel to execute their responsibilities in support of the creationof business value.4 GEIT is complex and multifaceted; therefore, members of the governing board and senior management typicallyneed assistance with its implementation. Over the years, good practice frameworks have been developed and promoted to assist in thisprocess.5 One of these important GEIT frameworks is ISACA’s COBIT 5.6COBIT 5 builds on and integrates almost 20 years of development. From its foundation in the IT audit community, COBIT hasbecome a broader IT governance and management framework.
