The definition of PRT specified that the intervention must have included (1) that a clear purpose of the intervention was to improve muscle strength, (2) resistance was progressive, and (3) muscular contractions were effortful. These three components of program design are broadly consistent with the definition of PRT provided American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM). Although there are further components of program design in PRT, a more simplified definition was adopted due to this being an emerging field of research to allow us to capture all interventions that could be considered PRT involving people with stroke within the first 3 months
