The term on the left-hand side of the equation represents the gap between domestic
investment and saving.
Previously we showed that −Sf = F, the current account balance. Thus if the
economy runs a current account surplus, foreign saving is negative; if it runs a
deficit, foreign saving is positive. In the national income and product accounts
(NIPA), −Sf is listed as net foreign investment (NFI), which means it is also a
negative number if the economy is running a trade deficit. The summary table for
net saving and investment is shown in table 13.1, which shows the negative figures
for NFI in recent years.
