It was a delight to be able to speak with you yesterday. As discussed, in a past life I was a practising speech pathologist and audiologist. These days, I’m involved in strategic planning in education but volunteer, in a raft of roles, for Yayasan Peduli Kemusiaan (YPK) Bali.

YPK is a not-for-profit organisation which was founded in 2001 to provide rehabilitation for Balinese people who have a physical disability, and who are unable to access formal health care facilities. Services are provided free of charge. Initially, YPK provided physiotherapy but in 2009, it established an informal education program and in 2010, a mobile rehabilitation clinic for rural communities. In 2012, YPK further expanded its services by introducing a hearing program named BaliRungu. This program provides Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) prevention checks and community education about hearing loss. It also distributes hearing aids to help people with hearing impairment and provides them with auditory training sessions to maximise the impact of the hearing aids. Since 2009, the Inspirasia Foundation has been YPK Bali's major donor providing support for the Rehabilitation Program, the Informal Education Program and the Mobile Clinic Program. However, this funding is becoming increasingly difficult to access as YPK does not produce commercially viable outputs. The Santo Leo Foundation provides support to the BaliRungu Program but again this is limited. Additional information is available at http://ypkbali.org/

In August of this year, I was very privileged to work onsite and support the YPK team. It became very evident that the BaliRunga program, managed by an Jakartan University qualified audiologist, was sadly lacking in equipment and that pure tone screening assessments were being conducted in far from ideal conditions particularly when visiting remote villages. Currently, the testing equipment is limited to a fairly antiquated pure tone (air and bone conduction) audiometer and an old otoscope. The sole audiometer is transported to Jakarta for calibration leaving the program with a screening tool.

While I appreciate your request for a “wish list”, you can see that almost any addition (used or new) would make a difference. I was initially seeking some audiocups (e.g. Amplivox), a sound level meter and a tympanometer. However, there is a huge gap in the program’s ability to screen infants as they have no access to assessing OEAs. Given a magic wand, I’d also conjure up an additional audiometer so that calibration did not interrupt screening programs and a new otoscope.

YPK is working hard to develop a more strategic approach to the services it provides, in particular to securing sustainable funding. However, it is undeniable to it will always require the support of philanthropic organisations and the goodwill of organisations such the Telethon Speech and Hearing Centre.
