If you wanted after 8 hours you could break your 12 hour shield and continue to fight for another 8 hours before you got kicked out again.
However a few months ago they changed this 8 hour rule to 6 hours now. What this meant is that I lost 2 hours of playing time before I had to go on defense again. Defense normally means a loss of trophies unless you are lucky. But 70% of the time you will lose. So my time to get to 4,000 trophies took longer than expected.
