We randomly selected 15 of the 46 gaps for destructive sampling to determine tree age. All trees taller than 1 m were destructively sampled in gaps with less than 100 trees. In larger gaps, the 10 tallest trees per species occurring in the northern, middle and southern thirds of each gap were selected. Sample sizes were unbalanced because not all species occurred in all gaps and gap positions. In total, 381 western hemlock, 89 western redcedar. 53 hybrid spruce, 33 subalpine fir, IO paper birch and 1 lodgepole pine were destructively sampled.
