The important work of Vinay and Darbelnet (1958) on the comparison of English and French served as an important guide to many translators in formulating rules for sets of equivalences, and this same approach is reflected in a number of articles in Meta.It is interesting that Wandruska (1969) reversed the process. Instead of setting up rules for translational correspondence on the basic of comparative linguistic analyses, her employed translations of text into various languages as a basis for determining comparative structures.Contrastive linguistics, as represented, for example, in Papers in Contrastive Linguistics, edited by nickel (1971), likewise has a number of obviously important implications for any theories of translation based on surface structures, although contrastive linguistics is also concerned with deep-structure contrasts.
