FURUNCULOSIS
Furunculosis has been recognized for over 100 years. The first report of an
outbreak was on a German brown trout hatchery. Furunculosis is caused
by Aeromonas salmonicida, and most fish (salmonids, labrids, ciprinids,
turbot and cod) are susceptible to this bacterium in different degrees, as it
is the case with trouts, where rainbow trout is a lot less susceptible than
are brook or brown trout (Traxler and Bell, 1988; Hiney and Olivier, 1999).
The typical furunculosis is caused by a subspecies named salmonicida,
whereas the forms of disease caused by atypical A. salmonicidaare due to
other subspecies namely achromogenes, masoucidaor smithia. The
geographic distribution of this pathogen is almost worldwide, with the
possible exception of New Zealand. Aeromonas salmonicidais a non-motile
fermentative Gram negative rod which produces a brown water soluble
pigment on tryptone containg agar; it does not grow at 37ºC and produces
catalase and oxidase (Austin and Austin, 1993). Aeromonas salmonicida
