Richard Titmuss was also influenced by this line of thinking, as we discuss in the next section, but his writing has also come under close feminist scrutiny because of its influence on mainstream social administration in the 1960s and 1970s (Rose, 1981; Pascall, 1986), and because much of Titmuss's area of study directly concerns women -population control, demographic changes, childbearing, the elderly, female dependence - especially in the essays 'The Position of Women' and `Industrialization and the Family' (Titmuss, 1958). Although Titmuss. wrote about women, he nevertheless cast them in a particular family mould which was derived from a contemporary sociological 'functionalist' view otef the family. Thus Gillian Pascall (1986) notes that when Titmuss wrote about demographic changes in family life, or the greater involvement than men in childbearing, he was displaying a concern with the form rather thi y the content of family life: that is, how far the communal values of family
life balanced and were functional for the competitive values of the publi world of work. In this way he also perpetuated thedistinction between the public and the private, `a distinction which not only s to an idealization tend of relations within the ' e private sphere' but also a blindness to, first, some of the darker sides of relations of power, control and violence within the family, and secondly, to the role the family plays in bolstering, rather than balancing the economy.
