Pattern Analysis
Until a few years ago, the idea that market movements are patterned was highly controversial,
but recent scientific discoveries have established that pattern formation is a fundamental
characteristic of complex systems, which include financial markets. Some such systems
undergo "punctuated growth," that is, periods of growth alternating with phases of nongrowth
or decline, building fractally into similar patterns of increasing size. This is precisely
the type of pattern identified in market movements by R.N. Elliott some sixty years ago.
The basic pattern Elliott described consists of impulsive waves (denoted by numbers) and
corrective waves (denoted by letters). An impulsive wave is composed of five subwaves and
moves in the same direction as the trend of the next larger size. A corrective wave is
composed of three subwaves and moves against the trend of the next larger size. As Figure 1
shows, these basic patterns link to form five- and three-wave structures of increasingly larger
size (larger "degree" in Elliott terminology).
In Figure 1, the first small sequence is an impulsive wave ending at the peak labeled 1. This
pattern signals that the movement of one larger degree is also upward. It also signals the start
of a three-wave corrective sequence, labeled wave 2.

Sampai beberapa tahun yang lalu, gagasan bahwa pergerakan pasar yang bermotif sangat kontroversial,
tetapi penemuan-penemuan ilmiah baru-baru ini telah menetapkan bahwa pembentukan pola adalah dasar
karakteristik sistem yang kompleks, yang meliputi pasar keuangan. Beberapa sistem tersebut
mengalami "pertumbuhan punctuated," yaitu, periode bolak pertumbuhan dengan fase non-growth
atau penurunan, bangunan fractally ke dalam pola yang sama meningkatkan ukuran. Inilah

Pola dasar Elliott dijelaskan terdiri dari gelombang impulsif (dilambangkan dengan angka) dan
gelombang korektif (dilambangkan dengan huruf). Gelombang impulsif terdiri dari lima subwave dan
bergerak dalam arah yang sama dengan trend dari ukuran yang lebih besar berikutnya. Gelombang koreksi
terdiri dari tiga subwave dan bergerak melawan tren dengan ukuran yang lebih besar berikutnya. Sebagai Gambar 1
menunjukkan, pola-pola dasar menghubungkan untuk membentuk lima dan struktur tiga gelombang semakin besar
ukuran (lebih besar "gelar" dalam terminologi Elliott).
Pada Gambar 1, urutan kecil pertama adalah gelombang impulsif berakhir di puncak berlabel 1 . Ini
pola sinyal bahwa gerakan satu lebih besar derajat juga ke atas. Hal ini juga menandakan awal
dari tiga gelombang urutan korektif, berlabel gelombang 2.
