The Synectics approach, developed by Gordon (1961), was selected by Joyce and Weil (1986) as a model of teaching for creativity and is an istructional strategy for promoting divergent thinking strategies. The Synectics approach emphasizes the use of metaphoric thinking primarily through generation of analogies. Joyce and Weil presented one derived from Synectics strategy that involves six phases, directed toward helping learners generate new ideas, or new ways of looking at a familiar concept:
