Grave difficulties confronted the German republic. Internally, there was continuing embittered opposition of a monarchist and nationalist Right and of communist, pro Russian “Left”. In foreign affairs, Germany was penalized and fettered by the terms of what seemed ton most of its people a harsh and unjust peace treaty. To make matters worse, the country’s economic position was extremely precarious.
