• We’re not in charge. Group members approach each other and the group with caution, uncertain about the group’s norms. The practitioner helps to identify common needs, interests and links between members, inviting mutual trust and support – a ‘partnership in mutual aid’ (p. 64).
• We are in charge. Some members attempt to impose their agenda or direction on the group, which produces resistance and conflict. The practitioner helps them understand that they are in the process of agreeing shared norms.
• We’re taking you on. Group members challenge the practitioner’s role and struggle with how to engage with or reject the practitioner’s help. The social worker helps them to explore their feelings about the practitioner and to remove barriers to using their potential contribution.
• Sanctuary. Members feel achievement and inclusiveness through working on power and authority, and feel a new caring, effectiveness and closeness. The social worker shares this feeling of engagement and helps the group to use the security they have created to work on real problems.
• This isn’t good any more. Group members do not want to take the risk of struggling with their problems, and feel disenchanted and angry with the group. The social worker demonstrates confidence in their capacity to work on problems and encourages them to explore rather than reject their negative feelings.
• We’re okay and able. By working through their ambivalence about whether the group can help them, the group’s members gain confidence that they can work out difficult problems. They choose from the various options that are available to them from the skills in the group. The practitioners helps them to enhance their capacity to clarify, focus, resolve conflicts and act.
• Just a little longer. Group members want to keep on with the security of the group, since it has been successful in helping them with their problems. However, they can now use their experience to manage more effectively on their own. The social worker helps them to separate from the group, valuing and confirming the helpful progress that has been made.
