Hence, practitioners may want to consider measures of effectiveness of career counseling other than career maturity and career decidedness. Some noteworthy examples of career outcomes are employment, job satisfaction, and quality of life. In high school settings, counselors may want to consider academic measures and indicators of postsecondary planning. Lapan and Kosciulek (2001) presented a framework for identifying postsecondary placements for high school students and a procedure for creating career counseling programs with sensitivity to the needs of diverse communities.
With college students, there are issues related to how many times a student changes his or her major, time spent completing a degree, and grade point average, among others. Although Goal Attainment Scaling has rarely been used in career counseling research (Hoffman, Spokane, & Magoon, 1981), it has many advantages and is applicable in many career counseling situations. To assist counselors in selecting multiple measures from multiple perspectives, Whiston (2001) developed an outcome scheme specifically for selecting outcome measures for career counseling interventions.
