The early work on predicting the occurrence of tidally mixed areas was done
in waters around the United Kingdom (Section 4.5.1). When tidally driven currents moving across the sea floor are sufficiently strong to generate turbulence
that breaks down any stratification in the water column above, that area is said
to be tidally mixed. As we showed in earlier chapters, Simpson and Hunter (1974)
and Pingree et al. (1978a) showed how to predict the occurrence of tidally mixed
areas on Georges Bank, Nantucket Shoals, in the mouth of the Bay of Fundy, and
off the southwest coast of Nova Scotia.
