Unofficial Chevy Jolt EV site goes viral

The automotive world was expertly trolled this week when a mysterious new car called the Chevy Jolt EV suddenly went viral.

At first the news appeared to be an announcement by Chevrolet that a new, sporty electric car had been launched. A website, ChevyJoltEV.com, had been designed to look like an official Chevrolet site -- complete with spec sheet, color selector, and loads of marketing copy.
Of course, there is no such car.
To add realism to the "launch," the perpetrator orchestrated a coordinated release with Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram accounts as well. Astute observers, however, may have known it was a hoax if they recognized the car depicted as the Chevy Tru 140S concept shown in Detroit in 2012.
Who could be behind such an elaborate deception? As it turns out, it was an automotive industry marketing consultant named Matt Teske (Full disclosure. Teske is a friend of mine, but I had no idea he was up to this). Unmasked by Road & Track, Teske revealed that he built the site for fun in his spare time. It was an easy task, as he often builds automotive websites as part of his job anyway.
Teske is also a big fan of both EVs and front-drive Chevys like the Cavalier Z24. His household currently has a Volt and Spark EV. However, Teske also believes that there's a gap in the market for a small, sporty EV and wanted to prove there was demand. In a way, the Jolt was a way to "jolt" Chevy into considering building a car like this. Certainly with the press he's gotten, someone at GM is likely to have caught wind of it.
