THE THREE BODIES OF MAN

To the ancient Daoists, existence was a multi-faceted network of inter-related energies. Rather than restricting their view of life to the three-dimensional, physical world with which Western though usually concern itself, Daoists attempt to understand and work with the subtle elements of existence which sit within various overlapping realms. At first this way of understanding life can be confusing, particularly to Westerners, but gaining a better understanding of how the Daoists view the world will help to speed up the progression of your Nei Gong practice.
We have already looked at the Daoist process of creation in the previous chapter. This can help us to understand the formation of the external universe or macrocosm. Now we need to learn how this process is reflected within the microcosm of our own body. This theory is of key importance within any of the Daoist internal arts.
The entity which we simply know as Dao gave birth first to Heaven and then Earth. Within the macrocosm these provided the building blocks for physical existence: a screen upon which the various dramas of life could be projected. Within the microcosm of the human body Dao first gave birth to pure human consciousness which in turn provided the seed for the physical form of our body. Figure 2.1 shows how these two processes directly reflect each other.
