MODERN HISTORICAL DEVELOPMENTSThe history of the Western world since the fourteenth century, at least, has beeninextricably connected with that of the Muslim world. The reconstitution ofEurope in the early modern era took place against the background of the hegemonyof the Muslim world in North Africa, the Middle East, and EasternEurope.3 For example, the fifteenth century witnessed three major events thathad an immeasurable impact on the history of Muslim–Western relations: thefirst was the Ottoman conquest of Constantinople in 1453; the second, theexpulsion of the Muslims from Spain; and the third was the unintendedEuropean discovery of the new world through the efforts of Columbus.
