MODERN HISTORICAL DEVELOPMENTS
The history of the Western world since the fourteenth century, at least, has been
inextricably connected with that of the Muslim world. The reconstitution of
Europe in the early modern era took place against the background of the hegemony
of the Muslim world in North Africa, the Middle East, and Eastern
Europe.3 For example, the fifteenth century witnessed three major events that
had an immeasurable impact on the history of Muslim–Western relations: the
first was the Ottoman conquest of Constantinople in 1453; the second, the
expulsion of the Muslims from Spain; and the third was the unintended
European discovery of the new world through the efforts of Columbus.
