The total gender parity index of female to male students, including both
general senior secondary education (SMAs and MAs) and vocational senior
secondary education (SMKs and MAKs), was 0.98 in 2009/10. There has
been little change over the past decade in overall gender parity at senior
secondary level but the picture changes when looking more closely at
different types of schools (Figure 4.1). Over the period 2000 to 2010, the
proportion of female students in SMAs declined slightly and then grew so
female students outnumbered males by 14%. Meanwhile, female enrolment
in SMKs is very low and declining, with the gender parity index of 0.76 in
2000/01 falling to 0.71 in 2009/10. It may be that vocational schools offer
more courses in subjects that young men are currently interested in, or
for which there is a cultural assumption that they are for men rather than
women. It would be reasonable to assume that this could disadvantage young women who are unable to take up or are disinclined towards academic study.

proporsi siswa perempuan di SMA menurun sedikit dan kemudian tumbuh sehingga
siswa perempuan kalah jumlah laki-laki sebesar 14%. Sementara itu, pendaftaran perempuan
di SMK sangat rendah dan menurun, dengan indeks paritas gender 0,76 di
2000/01 jatuh ke 0,71 di 2009/10. Mungkin sekolah kejuruan menawarkan
program yang lebih dalam mata pelajaran yang laki-laki muda sedang tertarik, atau
yang ada asumsi budaya bahwa mereka adalah untuk laki-laki daripada
perempuan. Ini akan masuk akal untuk mengasumsikan bahwa ini dapat merugikan perempuan muda yang tidak mampu untuk mengambil atau segan terhadap akademik studi.
