The use ofshort-acting opioids enables rapid induction, optimal operativeconditions, and quick recovery with few side effects.Faster offset, easy titratability, and decreased accumulation, especially of remifentanil, are particularly useful formanaging intraoperative responses during maintenance ofgeneral anesthesia. In several comparative, randomizedclinical trials, use of short-acting opioids during theinduction and maintenance of general anesthesia in surgicalpatients resulted in effective analgesia and attenuatedresponses to various stimuli. These include attenuated stressresponse to endotracheal intubation, intubation without theuse of a muscle relaxant, Laryngeal Mask Airway placement, and fast-track coronary artery bypass grafting surgery [59].
