An exposure near the fossil localityshows that fine-grained beds dip gently away from aburied granitic knob or ridge. At the north end of the basin, 2 miles south of thenarrows, a normal fault, dipping steeply to the south, brings the basal conglomerate into contact with the underlyingsharpstone conglomerate. The displacement isbelieved to be not more than a few tens of feet. The Pliocene beds appear also to be faulted at severalplaces along the base of the Mazatzal Mountains, although relationships were not mapped. It is possiblethat the basalt flows along Slate Creek may be related tofaulting along the Mazatzal Mountain front, but this isnot certain. No faulting has been observed to displacethe Pliocene beds along the west and south sides of theSierra Ancha. An adequate study of structural relationships of thePliocene deposits of Tonto Basin would be desirable becausethe basin is situated along a line that has been suggestedas a structural and physiographic boundary betweenthe Colorado Plateaus and the Basin and Range Provincesby several authors (Heindl and Lance, 1960). Althoughthere has obviously been some structural movement sincethe early or middle Pliocene, the only evidence for differentialmovement between the basin and adjacent mountainblocks seems to be along the eastern side of theMazatzal Mountains, and the extent of such movement isnot known.
