• WHY is this drug prescribed?
Silver sulfdiazine, a “sulfa” drug, is used to prevent and treat infections of second and third degree burns. It kills a wide variety of bacteria.

• WHEN should it be used?
Silver sulfadiazine usually is applied once or twice a day. Follow the instructions on your prescription label carefully and ask your pharmacist or doctor to explain any part that you do not understand.

• HOW should it be used?
Silver sulfadiazine comes in a cream. Before applying the medication, clen the burned area and remove any dead or burned skin. Always wear a sterile, disposable glove when you apply silver sulfadiazine . Cover the cleaned burned area with a 1/6 – inch thickness of cream. Keep the burned area covered with cream at all times; reapply the cream to any area that becomes uncovered.

• WHAT SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS should i follow while using this drug?
Do not stop using silver sulfadiazine until your doctor tells you to do so. Your burn must be healed so that infection is no longer a problem.
Gently wash the burned skin area daily to help remove dead skin.
If your burnm becomes infected or if your infection wones, contact your doctor.

• WHAT SIDE EFFECTS can this drug cause? WHAT can do about them?
Although side effects from silver sulfadiazine are not common, they can occur.
Pain, burning, itching. If these effects are severe, contact your doctor.
Skin rash. Contact your doctor.
Unusual bleeding or bruising, fever, sore throat, yellowing of skin or eyes, blood in urine, aching joints, unusual weakness. Stop using this medication and contact your doctor immediately.
• WHAT OTHER PRECAUTIONS should i follow while using this drug?
Before you use silver sulfadiazine, tell your doctor if you are allergic to any “sulfa” drug or other medications or if you have liver or kidney disease.
Before you use silver sulfadiazine, tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breast-feeding.
Do not apply this drug to infants less than two months of age.
Do not allow anyone else to use your medication.

• WHAT STORAGE CONDITIONS are necessary for this drug?
Keep this medication in the container it came in and out of the reach of children. Store it at room temperature.
If the cream darkens, discard it and obtain a fresh supply.
