This imbalance is illustrated in Fig. 7.03, which shows the earth and themoon again from above the north pole. Along the center line perpendicular tothe line joining the earth and moon, the gravitational force on each particle supplies the required centripetal force. On the half closest to the moon, the gravitational force is greater than the centripetal force that causes the ocean to pile upunder the moon. On the half of the earth away from the moon, the gravitationalforce is not strong enough to supply all the centripetal force required to keep theparticles moving in the required circle, and the particles tend to move farther away.This process creates the tidal bulge on the side of the earth away from the moon.
