Some schools use a handout to help students determine the credibility of
Web sites. Webevaluation criteria vary from school to school but often include the author’s credentials and affiliation, title of the work, whether or not
sources of information are stated, date of creation or modification, and URL.
The scope of the work is im portant. Is the purpose stated? Are the facts in deed
facts, or just opinions? Students must be taught to look for keywords or
phrases, such as “in my opinion,” or “every one agrees that” in order to identify a possible bias. Is the information useful? Students have to be taught that
not all information, although interesting, is pertinent to their topic.
