The postmodern perspective queries the Eriksonian
notion of a coherent and stable identity amidst the flux and
impermanence of postmodern life (e.g., Bauman, 1995; Gergen,
1991). With unstable forms of community integration,
identity is seen as much more dynamic, multiplistic, relativistic,
fluid, context-specific, and fragmented (Coˆte´, 2006;
Rattansi & Phoenix, 1997; Schachter, 2005). This view
relates quite closely to current perspectives of emerging
adulthood in Western industrialized societies. Researchers
describe this life period as having shifted from ‘‘settling
down into adulthood roles of marriage, parenthood, longterm
work, and a long-term residence’’ to unsett ledness,
exploration, and instability (Arnett, 2006, p. 7). Five distinct
developmental features of emerging adulthood are suggested
in the literature: identity explorations, instability, self-focus,
feeling in-between, and a sense of possibilities (Arnett,
2004). These are also manifested in the realms of love and
work, as described in the next section.
