determining a focus
The focus for the performance task is what you
decide that students should know and be able to
do. Perhaps the best way to begin determining a
focus is to concentrate on one Academic
Expectation or content standard. In doing this,
you will have targeted the Expectation or standard
for assessment. Once you have an initial draft of
the complete performance task and scoring guide,
review the task to determine whether or not other
Expectations or standards can easily be targeted.
Then the draft of the task can be revised and a
final version can be prepared for the students.
Targeting multiple Academic Expectations or
content standards is discussed further on page 25.
Be careful not to target so many Expectations or
content standards for assessment that you are
unable to assess them all. It might be a good idea
to only target one Academic Expectation or
content standard the first time you design a
performance task. Once you have developed a few
tasks you will find it easy to target more. Three to
six Expectations or standards are probably a
manageable number to assess.
