Similar exploration processes appear in love relationships,
which in emerging adulthood become more intimate and serious
than in adolescence (Collins, & van Dulmen, 2006;
Seiffge-Krenke, 2003; Seiffge-Krenke, Shulman, & Klessinger,
2001). In general, by the time of emerging adulthood,
the focus of romantic relationships is on exploring the potential
for emotional and physical intimacy and eventually forming a
committed relationship with a lifelong romantic partner
(Arnett, 2000; Lanz & Tagliabue, 2007). Furman and Wehner’s
(1997) theory of romantic relationships in adolescence and
young adulthood outlines how heterosexual relationships, first
serving the need for friendship, develop and transform into
attachment relationships. Hazan and Zeifman (1994) and others
(Keren & Mayseless, 2013; Trinke & Bartholomew, 1997) suggested
that within a hierarchy of attachment figures, romantic
partners ultimately replace parents to occupy the top spot.
