Similar exploration processes appear in love relationships,which in emerging adulthood become more intimate and seriousthan in adolescence (Collins, & van Dulmen, 2006;Seiffge-Krenke, 2003; Seiffge-Krenke, Shulman, & Klessinger,2001). In general, by the time of emerging adulthood,the focus of romantic relationships is on exploring the potentialfor emotional and physical intimacy and eventually forming acommitted relationship with a lifelong romantic partner(Arnett, 2000; Lanz & Tagliabue, 2007). Furman and Wehner’s(1997) theory of romantic relationships in adolescence andyoung adulthood outlines how heterosexual relationships, firstserving the need for friendship, develop and transform intoattachment relationships. Hazan and Zeifman (1994) and others(Keren & Mayseless, 2013; Trinke & Bartholomew, 1997) suggestedthat within a hierarchy of attachment figures, romanticpartners ultimately replace parents to occupy the top spot.
