Role expectation are simply expectations held by particularized or generalized other for the appropriate behavior that ought to be exhibited by the person or persons holding a given role. Thus, for example, the society at large, individual patients, patients from different sosioecomic classes, and similar group have expectation concerning how a person should function in the role of physician. Some expectations are generally hel, some are only held by "pocket" of other. And some are idiosyncratic and characteristic of spesific person-other relationships.
There seems to be an interchangeability of the term "norm" and "expectation" in role theory literature. Expectations are generally viewed as shared or individual norms of how persons occupying a give position-role should function in that role.
