Asperger’s syndrome is one of the pervasive developmental disorders, a group of disorders that includes autism. It is a developmental disability marked by impairments in social relationship and in verbal and non-verbal communication and restrictive repetitive patterns of behavior, interest and activities, which has become a widely known disorder in recent years. Furthermore, there is a movie which reflects a life of a man with Asperger’s syndrome with problem in his social relationship and language comprehension. Yet, this study is focused on his language comprehension disorder.
This study describes the phenomena of the movie to answer the two research problems. First, “What are the types of language comprehension disorder of Asperger’s syndrome character in the movie “My Name is Khan?” and “what are the contexts causing the language comprehension disorders of character in the movie My Name is Khan?”. To get the data of language comprehension disorder and the contexts to describe the language comprehension disorder, this study uses descriptive qualitative approach. Besides, it uses Carroll (language disorder),Schank (acceptable response) and Attwood et al (Asperger’s syndrome) theories to analyze data related to language comprehension disorder and the context causing the language comprehension disorder.
As the finding, Khan as the main character with Asperger’s syndrome has difficulties in receiving and understanding message of topic conversation of other speakers which are appropriate with the types of language comprehension disorder. They are absurd response, odd response, more relevant but not very polite response, and marginal response. In addition, the responses which are produced by Khan happened in the different contexts, such as academic functioning, general academic functioning, social performance, social language, social behaviors, and social perceptions.
