A0 classification. This is alphanumeric, ascribinga code specifict o every fracture
with increasing complexity, which identifies the anatomical locatio(Fn igure
I), type, group and subgroup of the fracture.
Fracture locationis identified by the first two numbers. The firnstu mber refers
to the bone involved 1, humerus; 2, radius and ulna; 3, femur; 4, tibia and fibula;
5, spine; 6, pelvis; 7, wrist and hand; 8, foot. The secondn umber refers to the bone
segment: 1, proximal metaphyseal; 2, diaphyseal; 3, distal metaphyseal. The
metaphyseaVdiaphysea1 junction is a point equivalent to the width of the metaphysis,
such that the metaphyseal segment forms a square. The two exceptions are
the proximal femur, whetrhee proximal segmenits abovea line through the lower
border of the lesser trochanter, and the ankle, where malleolar fractures are
segment 44.
