TRANSFORMING KARMA INTO MISSION

SGI President Ikeda constantly urges us to lead lives of vigorous human revolution, transforming karma into mission.

On one occasion, he wholeheartedly encouraged a man whose wife had died of illness at a young age:

Be strong. Don’t allow yourself to be defeated.
Mr. Toda [second Soka Gakkai president] also lost his wife and an infant daughter when he was young. He said that when people experience painful karmic suffering such as losing a partner or child, falling gravely ill, or struggling with financial hardship, it enables them to lead a more profound life, a life of mission.

No one can avoid the suffering of having to part from loved ones. Even those who seem trouble-free now will inevitably experience painful suffering at some point. With the vast life state you develop through overcoming your own sorrow, you can warmly encourage others who are suffering. The key is to transform your karma into mission.

Your wife is trying to help you become a Buddha. Now is the time for you to attain Buddhahood.

As he listened, the man’s eyes began to shine with a profound sense of mission.

From one perspective, life is a series of unexpected events. But when we have the positive attitude that we can transform karma into mission, then life’s winters will always give way to spring—or rather, we will be able to experience life’s winters, just as they are, as spring.

For what purpose will we use our precious lives? From the moment we awaken deeply to our mission, the drama of changing our karma and accomplishing our human revolution begins to unfold on a grand scale.
