What To Do When Your Freelance Care

What To Do When Your Freelance Career Is Crumbling?
Added by Elvis M. @EMPTeam
Every so often it happens that a long-term work relationship you have been building, or a strong prospect you have been nurturing, turns around and leaves.
You financial planning goes belly up, and if you neglected client acquisition for a while, losing a strong client AND an important prospect at the same time can push you very fast with your back to a wall.
Well, imagine now that you just had also some high expenditures which depleted your bank account, like a surgery or a large acquisition.
Starting to panic yet?
Now, imagine further that your monthly bills are rolling in, rent (or mortgage), maintenance bills, etc...
If you didn't start panicking yet, then you have stronger nerves than I do, since all the above is right now happening to me.
I've been there though...
One of the main characteristics of freelancing is the unpredictability.
And I felt it quite a few times in my years of freelancing.
One month you are riding the big wave, getting job offers from everywhere (recently HubSpot contacted me, didn't work out, though, but I'm still flattered), having a massive income surge.
The next month you are praying for a couple hours of work just to fill your day.
It happens to every freelancer.
For some less often; for others regularly.
If it ever happens to you, though, remember one thing:
Your state of mind will define how you come out of these situations, nothing else.
Panic is, obviously, part of the game.
Our lifestyle is threatened, we have families who depend on us, with a mere income hiccup everything seems at stake, and you become terrified at times.
Handling these panic attacks is often hard, but obviously, you have only three choices how to cope with them:
1. Give in to them, and let them paralyze you while drifting in a downward spiral.
2. Cool off your head, and do a massive scale outreach to potential clients.
3. Pray to a higher being that the tides shift immediately.
Choice 1 & 3 will most likely have diminishing or negative results. So, what is left is not for the weak-of-heart or the ones afraid of rejections.
You have to find the strength to fight and accept every rejection as one more step to your new job.
There is no way around other than punching through.
For me, UpWork (formerly Odesk) was always the most rewarding.
A large amount of potential employers is always on the lookout for skilled freelancers.
If you search for “marketing” on UpWork, you will see that today over 7000 open positions are waiting for applicants.
One of them will certainly be the right fit for you.
I admit, though, to be somewhat biased towards UpWork, the reasons for this are actually quite obvious: I have a great work profile there, and am currently a proud bearer of the "Top Rated" badge with 100% client satisfaction score (brag).
Which results in the following stats:
of cover letter templates, which will allow you to personalize them very quickly.
DON'T EVER send out canned cover letters. They are terrible, and you can see that it is a letter meant for mass send outs.
You want the reader to feel unique, and that you are personally addressing them and their company, and not hundreds at the same time.
Apply to every job you feel you are qualified for.
Don't be too picky, since time is of utmost importance in cases like these.
Remember, it is a numbers game, the more shots you take, the higher the chance you will have a hit.
And in the end, if you are a recognized member of an online community, in which you have
