Depending on the focus, there are many questions that can be asked to help children sort, classify, and analyze data. They include,
How are these alike? Different? The same?
Why do these belong here? Why does this not belong?
Is there anything that doesn't belong here?
Can you find [or make] another one that would go in this group? What name could you give this group?
What if I asked you to sort the things in this group in another way? How would you do it?
Look at Anne's groups. How do you think these things were sorted? [with first and second graders]. What was the rule Anne used to divide these into groups?
Which group has the most? How can you tell without counting?
Which group has the least? How can you tell without counting?
What does this graph tell you?
Which group has more children? How many more are in this group than in that one? How many people in these two lines don't have a partner? [in experiences relating to bar graphs]
Tell me about the red in the circle. Is it more than the blue? Less than the blue? More than half? Less than half? [in experiences relating to circle graphs]
