A THEOLOGICAL ASSESSMENT OF DANIEL 9
[h.144-145] The deterministic outlook of Daniel and the other biblical apocalyptic texts has been discussed in a preliminary manner in connection with chapter 7. Let us now enlarge that discussion by acknowledging that the notion has become quite foreign to large segments of Jewish and Christian thought. Literalistic interpreters, of course, still hold to the idea of a predetermined, divine plan inexorably being worked out in history. In fact, elaborate schemes, such as that of pre-millennial dispensationalism, purport to be able to draw charts of the entire sweep of human history and, on the basis of the interpretative clues given in Scripture, to pinpoint our present location on the chart. Many, however, have rejected the notion that human history can disclose a meaningful divine plan. Human history belongs to humans, and it resonates with the clash of the human will for the preservation and enhancement of the species with the human will for self destruction. God acts in that history, all right, above all through the memory of the healing and loving ministry of Jesus Christ in the midst of the history, but also through the words of encouragement, obedience, sacrifice, and honor whispered by the Holy Spirit in human hearts. God also suffer and responds and takes new initiatives, just as we have to do all along the way.
