While the primary HCC identifies direct and indirect healthcare services and the secondary HCC identifies users of health information that result from data gathered during the delivery of direct and indirect health- care services, the information continuum (IC) consists of the tools that the primary and secondary HCC parties employ to operate within an e-environment. A bona fide analysis of any healthcare environment ide- ally should address all three continuums contemporaneously. Exhibit 2.5 highlights the key categories and components necessary for a comprehen- sive review of any entity’s IC.
The categories in Exhibit 2.5 continue to develop in the marketplace at different technological rates, and each category requires distinct com- petencies to understand and appreciate. Auditors should therefore sepa- rate their IC review by these categories and ensure that their audit team includes experts for each category.
