Assessing Place-Value Understanding
Some students experience difficulty in understanding
place value. By working at the concrete level and
not rushing the transition to symbolic representation,
most students construct place-value meaning
by the third grade. However, some students have
continuing diffi culty with the meaning of tens and
ones. Kamii (1986) developed a structured interview
for place value. The interview can be done with any
number using the steps shown in Activity 10.6.
