Assessing Place-Value UnderstandingSome students experience difficulty in understandingplace value. By working at the concrete level andnot rushing the transition to symbolic representation,most students construct place-value meaningby the third grade. However, some students havecontinuing diffi culty with the meaning of tens andones. Kamii (1986) developed a structured interviewfor place value. The interview can be done with anynumber using the steps shown in Activity 10.6.
