Though the number of new hepatitis A infections has reached historic lows since the late 1990s, when the hepatitis A vaccine became more widely used, hepatitis A remains one of the most frequently reported vaccine-preventable diseases in the United States. In general, the incidence of hepatitis A in the United States has been cyclic, with nationwide increases occurring every 10 to 15 years. The last peak occurred in 1995. The wider use of vaccine is probably contributing to the striking decline in hepatitis A rates in the United States.[7] Figure 2 provides a visual record of reported cases of hepatitis A in the United States from 1952 to 2002.
