I didn’t want to go to work the next day but I did. I worked on a few designs without really paying attention to what I was doing. The only thing I liked about being there was the distraction. I didn’t think about Tony every second.
I kept my phone off just in case he tried to call me. When he saw the key on the table, he would know we were really over. He might chase me again, but he might give up too. I wasn’t sure what I wanted him to do. I grabbed the work phone and called Janet.
“Hello?”
“It’s Cassie.”
“Why are you calling me?” she snapped.
“I did it.”
She paused for a moment. “You broke up with my brother?”
My voice came out shaky. “Yeah…”
“You did the right thing.”
It didn’t feel like it. “Are you happy now?”
She sighed. “Cassie, I don’t blame you for wanting the security my brother has. Any girl would want it. And I don’t think you’re a bad person because of it. I just didn’t want that for my brother. It really wasn’t personal.”
“I wasn’t with him for his money,” I snapped. “I said that so many times now. The only reason why I ended the relationship was because he was miserable on his birthday. I know how much his family means to him. You were the one was being selfish by making him choose. And I know he would have picked me forever because you’re wrong, Janet. Totally wrong about me. But I did it for him. That’s it. There is no other reason.”
“Well, you made the right decision. And we can be friends again.”
“Janet, you’re a fucking bitch. I never want to be your friend again.” I slammed the phone down and hung up. When I felt the tears fall, I covered my face and let myself break down. None of this was fair. Tony shouldn’t have to choose between his girlfriend and his family, especially when I did nothing wrong.
