The aim of this paper is to provide a qualitative study of the dynamics of smoking, vis-a-vis its impact on
public health. A basic compartmental model, which subdivides a given population into a number of mutuallyexclusive
sub-populations (depending on their smoking status), is designed and qualitatively analysed. This
model is then extended to incorporate variability in smoking habits (namely mild or chain smoking) as well
as the impact of smoking-related illnesses in the community.
