Electrical charge at HDI has been studied with an in
situ technique that utilizes a magnetic head as the contact
potential probe. The technique involves applying
DC voltages to lower the FH, while measuring magnetic
performance (PW50). The HDI charge is in the range of
)0.2 to )0.9 V for typical HDI, and it is mainly from
surface potential due to either adsorbed layer or surface
coating. It was also shown that a zero HDI charge or
contact potential can be achieved by coating magnetic
heads with fluorinated carbon coating.
