A little while ago, I was looking over my giant poster describing the rules for trash separation and I noticed that tempura oil falls under the burnable section, but has a note underneath: “Harden or soak up with paper/cloth.” I understand soaking the oil up, but how do you harden it? That’s when I discovered oil solidifying agents. A popular one is called Katameru Tenpuru. Each box comes with 5 or 10 packets of oil solidifying agents. And the company claims that each packet is able to solidify 600g of oil without dirtying your hands or kitchen. They also claim that it’s made from plant products and therefore isn’t dangerous, but the strange chemical smell it emits make me dubious of that claim. And it saves you the trouble of wasting a hand towel or an entire roll of paper towels on sopping up oil every time you fry something.

The Katameru Tenpuru box. It's made by a familiar American company. SC Johnson, a Family Company.

This is the pan filled with used oil. I needed to get rid of that oil.

The katameru tenpuru comes in these little packets.

While the oil is still hot, you simply pour the white powder into the pan and make sure to stir it up real well. If you decide to solidify your oil after it cools, then you need to re-heat it, or it won't work.

Then you just let it sit there for an hour or more and it slowy turns opaque and orange-ish in color and solidifies. This is what mine looked like after about half an hour.

It's often hard to get the oil to come off in one piece. It may have solidified, but it ends up being fairly fragile. I first tried to get all the edges off with a fork and then went for taking out the whole thing. This is the first time I've been this successful! And this is probably the 3rd time I've tried to solidify my used oil.

Then I picked the piece of oil up so I could throw it away. It's kind of slimy and a bit foul smelling and some oil remants stubbornly stuck to my pan. The smell lingers for a while. I left for several hours after this and then came back and could still smell it. Also, it's very difficult to get every little last bit off the pan. And since it's made with who-knows-what chemicals, I did a thorough cleaning 2 or 3 times, soaking the pan in soapy water and then scrubbing each time.

I finished the job by throwing away the oil in the burnable garbage, as instructed.
