Self-Governance and FPIC Initiative

First Peoples Worldwide (First Peoples) is an Indigenous-led organization that supports Indigenous-controlled, locally initiated, community-driven development with small grants from its Keepers of the Earth Fund. First Peoples believes strong self-governance isthe foundation forself-determination and the exercise of Free, Prior, and Informed Consent (FPIC).

PURPOSE
The purpose of this initiative is to support Indigenous Peoples’self-governance, toincrease their capacity to exercise FPIC,to build inclusive and transparent political systems, and include both traditional and contemporarygoverning structures indecision-making.

First Peoples seeks to fund:

Self-governance projects:Examples include traditional and contemporary governing structures, election codes, policy formulation, communications and transparency, participation andinclusive representation, etc.

FPIC Projects:Examples includeformulating and implementing FPIC policies, shareholder advocacy, corporate engagement, technical capacity,negotiations and community organizing, etc.

FUNDING CONSIDERATIONS and PROCESS
Grants will range from $5,000 to $10,000 with an average of $7,000 for a project covering12months. Communities with corporate operations on their lands will be given priority for FPIC projects.All applicants must share project outcomes and lessons learned and:
• be an Indigenous-led andcommunity-based organization;
• have an organizational bank account or a fiscal sponsor.

Funds cannot be used to support individuals, school applications or college or university scholarships, legal research, political lobbying, projects that do not originate from or are not led by an Indigenous community, travel to the United States, general operating, or event fundraising.

SUBMITTING YOUR APPLICATION
First Peoples accepts applications between January 1st and October 31st.We receive written funding requests by email at [e-mail] by fax to [phone].
