Due to the complexities of today's working environment, meaning in work and in life is emerging as a construct that motivates individuals and is a prime contributor to personal fulfillment. Self-development models of a variety of origins (religious, philosophical, personal growth, metaphysics) have used a four domain or four level approach in their suggested path to experiencing meaning in life. The four domains have been identified by a range of labels and are generalized in this study as; (a) Socioemotional, (b) Cognitive, (c) Spiritual and (d) Physical. Literature suggests that skills and activities in these four domains facilitate an individual's experience of life meaning.
This study looks at the four domain model from the perspective of use in management education courses. The focus is placed on skills and activities in each of the domains that can be learned through pedagogical encounters. The Domain Activity Indicator was developed to assess a subject's skills and activities in each of the domains for hypothesis testing. The Life Regard Index (Battista & Almond, 1973) was used as the measure for the dependent variable, experienced life meaningfulness (ELM). Three hundred and fourteen adults (people over the age of 18) with some work experience participated as subjects.
Four hypotheses were tested with respect to the relationships between skills and activities in each of the domains and ELM. The first hypothesis looked at the predictive relationship between domain activity and ELM The second hypothesis investigated the relationship between a balance of activities across the domains and ELM. The third hypothesis tested the discretion between the factors. The fourth hypothesis suggested that the continual learning orientation will be the strongest predictor of ELM.
The results of the study supported the first hypothesis only. Specifically, that DAI scores (domain activities) were found to predict 28% of the variance in the LRI scores (experienced life meaning ). The emotional awareness scale was found to be the strongest predictor of ELM out of all the scales assessed.
