Any function in the child's cultural development appears on the stage twice, on two planes, first on the social plane and then on the psychological, first among people as an intermental category and then within the child as an intramental category. (Vygotsky 1966:44)
A child moving through the stages of primary and secondary intersubjectivity, protolanguage, then language itself, is from the very beginning mastering the
fundamental skills necessary for language development. The child is moving
through the stages of object- and other- to self-regulation. But the advancement
of the child comes only through the tutelage of an adult or a more competent
peer; this serves as a vicarious form of consciousness until such time as the learner is able to master his or her own actions through his or her own
