We have suggested here that the current generation of emerging
adults in Western industrialized countries face a developmental
task of finding life that is meaningful for them.
Narratives of self-fulfillment and self-realization, as well as the
desire to live a meaningful life, have been around for quite
some time (Maslow, 1970), but we suggest that current sociocultural
processes involving changes in worldviews toward
postmodern conceptualizations, as well as more variable and
fluid identity processes, bring this developmental task to the
fore. Specifically, emerging adults’ engagement in the domains
of work and romantic relations are viewed as reflecting the
general human need to find meaning in life and to live a meaningful
life. This perspective does not seek to replace the well known
identity or life goal conceptions but adds another
meta-narrative and invites examination of developmental processes
during emerging adulthood using this perspective.
Individuals clearly choose a profession or work in a given
job for a host of other reasons besides their search for meaning
(e.g., financial security and status). Similarly, their choice of a
romantic partner and the kind of romantic relation they maintain
reflect many more motives than the search for meaning
alone. Therefore, the suggested perspective is an additional
way to understand developmental processes in the love and
work domains during emerging adulthood, in particular in postmodern
industrialized cultures.
