Castonguay et al. (1994) reported a drastic decline in eel recruitment to the Great
Lakes. Between 1985 and 1992 the numbers of juveniles ascending an eel ladder
at a hydroelectric dam on the St Lawrence River declined more than 98%. There
are no other North American sites with direct counts of migrating juveniles,
but in the Bay of Fundy and in Chesapeake Bay catch-per-unit-effort data do not indicate a drastic decline in stocks at this time. On the other hand, declines in
catch per unit effort were noted in most of Europe, and seem to have occurred
at about the same time as the decline in the St Lawrence River. (Fig. 8.14).
