It's called operations research and deals with business systems. Just as in the physical sciences, where experiments are carried on in a laboratory, with operations research, managers can set up "models" of a system and experiment with this model and not the system itself.

So operations researchers take all these possibilities, state them in the shorthand of mathematical equations or inequalities and use a com¬puter tc work out the time-consuming math. Then, if the information fed in is correct, the outcome will be the best of all the choices, according to management's criteria.
The "model" is the heart of operations research. It can help the company know such things as how much inventory to keep on hand; where we should buy chips from outside sources; which grades of pulp to sell overseas; whether a log should go into decking or 2 x 4's or be sold or made into plywcod; how a distribution setup should be changed; or whether a change is even desirable.

Some of the techniques of operations research sound just as exotic as the very idea of being able to take a look at the future. Linear programming, critical path method, Monte Carlo technique, queuing theory, game theory, the black-box concept, probability theory, and simulation are some of them.
Even the models have names which are strange-sounding to the layman, such as probabalistic, deterministic, qualitative and quantitative models.
