The source collimators are located in the x-ray tube and limit the amount of x-ray beam emerging to thin ribbons of 1 to 10 mm. they resemble small shutters with an opening that adjust, dependent of the operator’s selection of slice thickness. The advantage of this fine collimated is the reduction if scatter radiation. Scatter radiation reduces image quality and increases the radiation dose to the patient. Reducing the scatter improves contrast resolution. Contrast resolution is the ability to differentiate small density differences on the image.
