"She lifted her chin. “Yes.”He turned to Ned. “I’ll be in the main barn.”Without sparing her another glance, he walked out of the barn.Deflated and miserable, she stared at the barn floor. She was losing him, she knew it. Despite the weeks spent working side by side, Travis still perceived her as little more than a spoiled, pleasure-seeking princess. And now one of her father’s oldest friends was beginning to view her that way, too. Ned’s continued presence simply meant that he wasn’t through giving her a piece of his mind.He didn’t beat about the bush. “I don’t know what’s gotten into you, Miss Margot, but I’d think long and hard about that decision you’re making.”“I have, Ned. Buying a new stud would be unwise—”“Unwise?” he repeated incredulously. “This is a breeding farm. The stallions are Rosewood’s foundation. Don’t you realize that without them there’s no future for the business your family started generations ago?”“Sometimes things have to change.”“Not these things,” he replied vehemently. “I would have thought you of all people would understand this, but I guess not. So I might as well tell you something else. You’re not the only one who’s been getting phone calls. Travis heard from Hugh Hartmann yesterday and again this afternoon.”A chill invaded her. “Hugh Hartmann? The man who hired him after he left Rosewood?”“That’s right. Hugh’s opening a new barn in Sperryville and is looking for a head trainer. He called and asked Travis if he’d be interested in the position. I never imagined I’d be saying this, but I wouldn’t blame Travis one bit if he called Hugh back and said yes. Think about that and maybe you’ll change your mind about what’s wise and what’s damned foolish.” As he stalked out, he passed Jade with a tight nod.“What’s going on?” she asked, walking up to her. “Ned looks really angry.”“I told him and Travis that I wasn’t going to purchase a new stud for Rosewood,” Margot replied dully. “And they’re none too happy that I’ve agreed to a location shoot here at Rosewood. Ralph Lauren needs an old house and Vogue is interested in doing a profile of me. They’ve asked Charlie Ayer to do the pictures.”“And what was Ned saying about Travis leaving Rosewood?”Margot turned away, ostensibly to check the latch on Faraday’s stall door. Quickly she wiped the sudden moisture from her eyes. “Apparently Hugh Hartmann called Travis about this new barn he’s bought. I wouldn’t be surprised if he decided to leave. He gave me due warning that he’d only stay if he thought we were committed to the business.”“But we are committed!” Jade protested. “You’re working your butt off. You should tell him we’re broke.”“And what would that accomplish? This entire business with the stallions underscores a basic fact. Farms like Rosewood have to be bankrolled. And we’ve got nothing in the bank. Instead of buying we’re going to have to sell as many horses as we can to make a profit this year. And instead of my chipping in with the day-to-day running of the farm, I’m going to have to accept as many high-paying modeling jobs as possible. That’s not the kind of outfit Travis wants or deserves to be working for.”“But if he stays we’ll have a better chance of making it.”
“I know.” She brought her fingers to her temple, massaging the pounding pressure points. “That was why I kept silent about the debts in the first place. But it was selfish of me.”
“So tell him!”
“I can’t!” Margot cried. “If I do, how will I be able to live with myself knowing he’s stayed with us out of pity? Horses aren’t just Travis’s livelihood, they’re his passion, his world. How could I keep him from accepting such a great opportunity like the one Hugh Hartmann’s offered?”
“Oh, my God, you’re, like, in love with him, aren’t you?”
“Yes, I am,” she replied with a quiet sadness. But that doesn’t mean he loves me, she added silently. “Listen, it’s getting late. We should go up to the house. Jordan should be here soon.”
Overcome with weariness, she glanced through the open doorway. The moon had yet to rise, making the sky as somber as her spirits. It was cold, too, she thought, shivering. The night was cold and empty, just like her.
Grabbing hold of one of the double doors, she pulled it shut. Jade stepped forward, took hold of the other one, and they met in the middle.
“Should I hit the lights?”
“No, I’m sure Travis will be back to check on Faraday.” Simply saying his name hurt.
“Do you really think he’ll go?”
“Once he realizes I’m not going to purchase a new stud, I can’t see why he’d stay. Hugh Hartmann must have more money than God to be opening another barn. Travis deserves to be in a place like that.”
“I’m starved,” Jade announced in an abrupt change of topic. “I hope Ellie made something good. Hey, aren’t you coming up to the house?”
“I’ll be up shortly. There’s something I have to do first.”
Try as she might, she couldn’t block from her mind Travis’s scornful expression when he’d left the stallion barn. She had made such a mess of things. At least she could fix one thing.
