Opel has released new details about
Opel has released new details about how they made the 2016 Astra up to 200 kg (441 lbs) lighter than its predecessor.
The biggest weight saving comes from the car's new architecture as the bodyshell and structure are 77 kg (169 lbs) lighter. Another 50 kg (110 lbs) were saved by using lightweight suspension components and the decision not to use full underbody aerodynamic paneling. The model also has a new exhaust system that is 4.5 kg (9.9 lbs) lighter than the previous one.
The Astra also has new wheels and tires which weigh up to 11.5 kg (25.3 lbs) less than before. This, in part, allowed engineers to use a more compact braking system which promises better performance despite weighing 10 kg (22 lbs) less
The car's engines also play an important role as the aluminum engine block on the turbocharged 1.4-liter EcoTec is 10 kg (22 lbs) lighter than the cast-iron block of its predecessor. The engines are also connected to new transmissions which themselves are 10 kg (22 lbs) lighter.
Last but not least, the Astra features new front and rear seats which are about 10 kg (22 lbs) lighter than in the previous model.
